Ashtanga yoga is a dynamic and vigorous form of Hatha yoga as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and his grandson, Sharath, at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, and all over the world. Ashtanga yoga focuses on asanas (positions) and pranayama (breathing control). Each position is meticulously designed, with a specific number of synchronised movements and breaths that link one position to another (vinyasa). The sequence of positions creates a continuous energy flow that heats the body and oxygenates the blood, priming glands and internal organs, cleaning and purifying the nervous system, eliminating toxins through sweat, and creating a lighter and stronger body together with a clearer mind. When practiced properly, Ashtanga yoga will gradually lead to the rediscovery of one’s full potential at all levels of the human consciousness (physical, psychic, and spiritual). Via correct breathing methods (Ujjayi Pranayama), the positions (asanas), and meditation (dristi), one is able to increase the control of one’s senses and gain a greater understanding of oneself. And with regular and committed practice, one is able to attain stability of mind and body.

Curro Arroyo started practicing Ashtanga yoga in Madrid under the guidance of Borja Romero and Natalia Paisano. A year later, he moved to El Palmar (Cádiz) drawn by the magic of the area and in an effort to take greater control over his own life. Once here, he travelled to Mysore (India) in order to train under Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009) and Sharath Rangaswamy. While there, he also had the opportunity to meet and learn from N.B.S. Ivengar and Bharath Kumar Shetty Handakunda. The same year, he visited Kadermo (Finland) to spend a few months practicing and broadening his knowledge with Stefan Strom. He also feels privileged to have been able to meet and attend an Ashtanga workshop in Milan run by David Swenson. Curro now dedicates his time to sharing what he has learnt from these masters and through his own practice; and his goal is to continue learning in order to make Ashtanga yoga his way of life.

Curro holds Ashtanga yoga classes every day of the week at different venues in the area (including in Roche itself). He is also happy to arrange group classes at any of our houses. (Curro Arroyo: 00 34 665 588 801).
