If you have spent any time on the Costa de La Luz or looking for a property here, you will know that it is virtually impossible to find a house with a large garden right on the beach. Well, Campo Corto is one of the very few! What is more, and as its name suggests, it is more than a beautiful beachfront property; it is a small piece of country...4,500m2, complete with twisted umbrella pines and a semi-wild garden made up of autochtonous plants that include junipers and protected mini palms right up to the clifftop. Depending on the direction of the wind, you will be lulled to sleep either by the sound of the waves or the nightingales (on calm nights both!) Campo Corto is located on the northwest corner of the Roche estate, from where you can enjoy views both ways along the 8km beach, out to the island of Sancti Petri, and across the protected heath behind the house. It is also an easy walk (600m) to the local shop, pharmacy, bar, and playground.

As soon as you walk through the garden gate you get the full view, down the garden, across the pool, and out to sea. And as you walk past the large terracotta pots and approach the impressive oak front door, you start to get a good idea of what you might find inside. Campo Corto is, and again as the name suggests, more a country house on the beach than a beach house per se: traditional print sofa coverings, brass bedheads, Andaluz tiles, sturdy oak furniture from Castilla León, and beautiful old ceramic plates and jugs are a constant reminder that you are somewhere quite different. But it is when you step out onto the large partially-covered terrace with its centenary olive tree and see the lawn stretch away, under the pines in one direction and to the pool and the clifftop chillout in the other, that you realise that there is probably no other property quite like it on this coast.

Everything at Campo Corto is on the ground floor except the fourth bedroom and bathroom and the large mezzanine with sofabed, which makes for the fifth bedroom. The layout is U-shape, so traditional in country houses in Andalusia: the living area in one wing, the bedrooms in the other, and courtyard in the middle. The large sitting room has views of the whole garden and the ships on the horizon beyond, there is a good wood-burning stove for winter, and the lofty ceiling incorporates the mezzanine on the first floor (and a rather imposing bishop that hangs high on one of the walls surveilling proceedings). Off the sitting room is the grand dining room, complete with its baronial candelabre and a wonderful old pharmacist’s cabinet. The kitchen is exactly what you would expect from this kind of house; it is traditional, not modern. The bedroom wing contains three rooms: the main suite (double bed) has a nice view over the courtyard, and the other two bedrooms (both twins) share a bathroom. The fourth bedroom (double bed) is on the first floor, and it has its own bathroom and nice views across the pines. Outside this bedroom is the large mezzanine with sofabed and its own sizeable balcony.

It is about 600m to the local shop, pharmacy, bar, and childrens’ playground. Roche also has its own tennis courts and five-a-side football pitches. In the summer months, there are several beach bars/restaurants to choose from, and within a 5-10 minute drive you have a larger selection of places to eat all year round. The area offers an endless list of activities, information on many of which you will find here on our website and on our Facebook page. And if you book with us, we provide you with detailed information on all our recommendations, details on local amenities, and our up-to-date guide to the best of everything! You could spend a wonderful holiday here without a car, and just hire bikes; but, assuming you will have a car, it’s 15 minutes to Conil, 20 minutes to the hill-top village of Vejer-de-la-Frontera, 30 minutes to Cadiz, 40 minutes to Tarifa and Jerez, and 90 minutes to Seville, all of which are well worth visiting. So, it’s good to have a car and probably worth coming for two weeks rather than one!!!!
