Golmar 13
Dating back to the beginning of the nineteenth century, Golmar 13, which has been restored respecting traditional methods and using local chestnut and stone, was originally the main house in the small hamlet of Golmar. The hamlet sits at the head of an untouched bowl-shaped valley some 200 metres above sea level on the seaward side of the densely forested ridge that separates the ría de Cedeira from the Atlantic. From its privileged position, the house enjoys what is possibly the most extensive coastal view in the whole of Spain; looking down across green fields, black cliffs, and 90km of sea and coast (all the way to the Islas Sisargas on the Costa de la Muerte). The hamlet forms a cul-de-sac, meaning that nobody passes through! Here you will find perfect tranquillity, the only sounds coming from the wind moving through the eucalyptus and the Atlantic swell breaking on the rocks far below. Dirt tracks and footpaths lead down to the cliffs or through the forest to one of Galicia's legendary lighthouses at Punta Candeleria. Walk about the hamlet at night, and you may well come across a wild horse, fox, or wild boar! By car, Golmar is a five minute drive from the fishing village of Cedeira, with its protected bay and beach, its shops, and famous tapas bars (the best percebes in Spain are supposedly collected from the base of its cliffs!) Drive for another 10 minutes and you come to the much photographed beach of Vilarrube, where a 1.5km stretch of fine white sand divides the mouths of two rivers that in a myriad of blues and greens (for ever changing with the state of the tide) run in to the far side of the ría de Cedeira. The beach is backed by a dune system with plants unique to this stretch of coast.
